Mary Helen MacKillop, now formally known as Saint Mary of the Cross, is the first and only Australian to be recognised as a Saint.  She was a Catholic nun, born in Melbourne on 15 January 1842 to Catholic Scottish parents. Together, with Father Julian Woods, they founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and a number of schools and welfare institutions throughout Australasia with an emphasis on education for the poor.

Mary trusted in God's will and providence in the face of many challenges until she died on 8 August 1909 at the Josephine convent in North Sydney were she is buried.  Mary was beatified on 19 January 1995 by Pope John Paul II.  On 17 July 2008, Pope Benedict XVI came to Sydney for the World Youth Day and prayed at her tomb.  Later, on 19 December 2009, he approved the recognition of a second miracle attributed to her intercession and on 17 October 2010 she was canonised during a public ceremony in St Peter's Square at the Vatican.  On that Day Pope Benedict XVI said these words: "Despite many challenges, her prayers to St Joseph and her unflagging devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom she dedicated her new congregation, gave this holy woman the graces needed to remain faithful to God and to the Church. Through her intercession, may her followers today continue to serve God and the Church with faith and humility!"

Through all her trial and tribulations St Mary of the Cross never lost faith and encourages others to follow God.  May our MacKillop Cluster and all of us follow her example.

Let us pray to her:

Lord God,  |
You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
and constant in bringing hope
and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence and
through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop we ask that you grant our request.
We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit and that we too,
like St Mary MacKillop,
may live with courage and trust.
We ask this through Jesus Christ.
Amen.

I hope you have all had a great week so far. Take care.

Principal

Term Dates

Please make sure you have made note of the dates during this term. There is a staff Professional Development Day on Friday 18th August - Pupil Free Day. We conclude Term 3 on Friday 22nd September and begin Term 4 on Tuesday 10th October. Please note the Monday 9th October is a staff Professional Development Day - Pupil Free Day.

Our school calendar on the St Kieran website was not synching due to technical issues which have now been resolved so please recheck the calendar for any updates.

Unwell Students

As we are well and truly in the colder months can we please ask that unwell students are not sent to school. Our staff will call parents if a child is unwell or presents unwell - we are not trained medical staff and if a child says they are unwell or looks unwell we will call the families to collect them. Sending an unwell child to school in turn has an impact on the other students as well as the staff and of course the families at St Kieran. Your consideration around this matter is appreciated.

If you need further clarification please refer to the https://www.health.wa.gov.au/ for recommendations of time children should be away from school for any sicknesses.

Uniform 2024

Just a reminder to all parents that from the beginning of 2024 the New Uniform will be required to be worn by all students. As has previously been communicated the over the past year we are in between uniforms and are allowing flexibility, however from the start of 2024 the new Uniform will be compulsory for students.

School shoes will need to be a focus area from 2024 as 'normal/standard' school shoes will be required for the academic uniform for both boys and girls. Not black sneakers, Air Forces, Air Max, Skate Shoes or other alternatives that can be found. The below are the shoes required. Sport shoes should be appropriate sport shoes not fashion shoes that are suitable for sport. Please keep this mind when looking for items and getting ready for 2024.

In Term 4 we will be using Uniform Rescue to collect any old uniforms or donations to send to less fortunate students and children in other countries. We will send out specific details at a later date however we will only be able to collect good quality second hand uniforms. We are leaving it until Term 4 as we move into the summer months and hope most parents are on top of the new uniform.

Sustainability News!

Dear Families,

Next week, during Week 5, we are planning to sell,

 ‘Bamboo Toothbrushes’.

This activity has been organised to highlight the issue of plastic pollution and the need to take action to reduce plastic waste wherever possible.

The toothbrushes will be on sale for $2.50 each for anyone who would like to buy a Bamboo Toothbrush.

They will be on sale in the undercover area, before school,

at recess, and afterschool, Monday – Thursday.

Children can bring their money along in wallets, purses, or an envelope. The staff selling the toothbrushes will help them with their purchase.

Why buy a Bamboo Toothbrush?

Bamboo toothbrushes:

  • work exactly the same as plastic toothbrushes, but
  • biodegrade when you’re finished with them and, act as a twice-daily reminder to reduce our plastic use.

Plastic toothbrushes:

  • are a short-life disposable plastic item that doesn't need to be made of plastic,
  • break down over 700+ years into micro and nano-plastics, killing marine life and releasing methane and,
  • are one of the common items found washed up on the beach during beach clean-ups.

Half of the money raised will go to our school while the other half will go to The Turtle Tribe Company. Thank you.

Please read below to find out more about the turtle company.

The Turtle Tribe was founded by 11 year old Ned Heaton, on a mission to help reduce ocean plastics, after seeing the scale of the problem first hand during his annual family camping trips on Mulgumpin, in Moreton Bay National Park.

“Every plastic toothbrush you’ve ever used in your life is still in the world somewhere,” says Ned. "Ocean plastics kill marine life, litter our beaches, pollute our food chain, and release greenhouse gases. Recycling isn’t the answer - only 3% of all the plastic ever made has been recycled. We have to change. We have to use less plastic, especially throw-away plastics.”

Founded in 2018, The Turtle Tribe has grown to be one of the largest bamboo toothbrush suppliers in Australia.
